I am an Iranian American constituent, and it would mean a great deal to me for you to voice support for the freedom of beloved political dissident and rapper Toomaj Salehi, who has received a death sentence by the Islamic Republic of Iran. I’ve taken the liberty of providing you with a draft statement, which I encourage you to make your own, and issue as soon as possible. I hope you will be able to issue a statement in support of Toomaj Salehi no later than Wednesday this week. Time is of the essence to save the life of an Iranian hero standing for freedom and democracy. 

Draft Statement:

“Today, I stand in solidarity with Iranian Americans advocating for the release of Toomaj Salehi, who has been sentenced to death by an Islamic Revolutionary Court in Iran. Toomaj’s case is another dark reminder of the Iranian regime’s brutal suppression of dissent and disregard for human rights.

Toomaj’s only ‘crime’ was calling for justice and accountability through his music, and expressing support for the Woman Life Freedom protests in Iran. Since his arrest, he has been subjected to torture, denied access to legal representation and endured prolonged solitary confinement. He now faces the ultimate punishment for his activism.

I condemn this death sentence in the strongest possible terms and call on the Iranian authorities to immediately release Salehi.

Toomaj Salehi’s courage and steadfast vision of human rights in Iran, serve as an inspiration to us all. We will continue to demand his release, and hold the Iranian regime accountable for its actions.”
