Why Shouldn’t the United States Government Release Any Funds to the Islamic Republic of Iran and Negotiate a Nuclear Arms Agreement?
There are several reasons why the United State government should not release funds to the Islamic Republic of Iran (IRI) and not negotiate a nuclear arms agreement with the IRI.
• IRI’s human rights record — The IRI is a repressive regime that has a long history of human rights abuses. The release of funds to the IRI would only help to prop up this regime and enable it to continue its abuses.
• IRI’s support for terrorism — The IRI is a sponsor of terrorism, and has provided financial and logistical support to terrorist groups such as Hezbollah and Hamas. The release of funds to the IRI would only help to increase its ability to fund terrorism and also help Putin’s Russia to continue her war atrocities in Ukraine.
• IRI’s nuclear program — The IRI has had a long-standing nuclear program, and there is concern that it is seeking to develop nuclear weapons. The release of funds to the IRI would only help to further its nuclear program and increase the risk of a nuclear arms race in the Middle East.
In addition to these concerns, there are also concerns that a nuclear arms agreement with the IRI would not be effective in preventing it from developing nuclear weapons. The agreement that was in place from 2015 to 2018, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), has been criticized repeatedly for being too weak and for not addressing IRI’s other destabilizing activities.
For these reasons, the United States government should not release funds to the IRI or negotiate a nuclear arms agreement with that government. Doing so would only help to prop up a repressive regime, increase the risk of terrorism, and make the Middle East a more dangerous place.
